Leaders who have experienced Yahweh describe him as “a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29) A song writer describes Yahweh this way in Psalm 97 >
“Yahweh reigns, let the earth be glad, let the distant shores rejoice! Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his holy throne. Fire goes before him and consumes his enemies on every side. His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before Yahweh, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory!”
The master icon captures the moment when Yahweh, Israel’s heavenly Father God, descends upon Mount Sinai and initiates a covenant with his chosen people. Our heavenly Father’s descent from his throne room to a mountain summit is accompanied by fire, lightning, smoke, and an earthquake. The rocks represent a boundary the Lord of heaven told Moses to set up so that the people could not enter into his presence. The people kneeling at the summit base are overwhelmed and afraid as they witness Yahweh’s power and glory. The Holy Spirit rests upon Moses as he alone enters into Yahweh’s presence to receive the Ten Commandments. The colorful wings illustrate verse 4 when God told his people, “You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings out of Egypt and brought you to myself.”
Jesus is sounding a ram’s horn illustrating the arrival of God upon the mountain summit in verse 16. Jesus says later that he is the only way to the Father, and if we have seen him, then we have seen the Father! (John 14:6-7) The Messiah is calling the people to humble themselves, repent of their sins, and obey the Lord of heaven and earth. Egypt is in the distance illustrating how Yahweh delivered the people from slavery and now adopts them as his family. The cherubim next to God has the lion face illustrating the boldness of Moses to enter the Lord of glory’s presence.
