The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In this story, Jesus shows the prophet Ezekiel the spiritual temple of Yahweh and coaches him to experience the river of his Holy Spirit. In John 7:38, Jesus prophesied, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38). Jesus helps Ezekiel enter into the river of life, the Holy Spirit, and helps him learn how to swim in this river.
In the master icon, we see Jesus with the cross on his chest and his hand raised illustrating his invitation for all of his followers to experience Yahweh’s kingdom by receiving and releasing the ministry of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The shining sun illustrates Father Yahweh’s blessing and anointing over this vision that the prophet Ezekiel experiences. Ezekiel swims in the river and experiences the power and joy of the Holy Spirit coming from the throne room of God.
The fruit bearing trees on the river bank represent God’s abundant provision for his people, and the leaves represent healing miracles for the sick who are in physical and spiritual bondage. These trees will bear fresh fruit every month and will never be out of season, because their roots draw from the river of the Holy Spirit. These fruit bearing trees ultimately represent Jesus’ Spirit-filled disciples who abide in him each day and serve as his ambassadors of reconciliation to the nations who have yet to hear of Jesus. The multi-colored fish in the river represents God’s people receiving the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations, and a prophetic foreshadowing of how he will offer his kingdom to all peoples through his Messiah.
The man catching fish represents a cross-cultural missionary who is trying to “catch” lost people for Yahweh’s kingdom. Jesus invited his first disciples to follow him by saying, “I will send you out to fish for people” (Mark 1:17). The music in the sky represents the glory of God filling the earth, a foreshadowing of Isaiah’s vision, “I am about to come and gather the people of all nations and languages, and they will come and see my glory!” (66:18)
